Floor Fans Vs. Ceiling Fans

There are times when your needs are best suited to a ceiling fan and occasions when you will need a floor fan instead. We will outline in general terms when you should use each type of fan.

Floor Fans

A free standing floor fan is just ideal for a room that has very low ceilings, very high ceilings or has a variable temperature throughout the year.

  • If your room has a very low ceiling, like in some cottages, you may be unwilling to install a ceiling fan in case it strikes someone while rotating. In this case a free standing floor fan is ideal as they can be placed in a corner out of the way. You will still benefit from the cooler air, but will not have to worry about getting hit by the rotating blades or effectively making the room smaller because of the headroom used by the fan.
  • In rooms with very high ceilings you may not get adequate cooling from a ceiling fan, simply because of the roof height. A ceiling fan without an extended downrod may just cool the upper layers of air in the room, leaving you still feeling hot and uncomfortable. In this case, rather than cluttering the ceiling with multiple fans, you can place a free standing floor fan where you need it - and leave it to cool the lower layers of air.
  • Indoor temperatures will fluctuate wildly throughout the year, especially in North American and European climates. If you have a room that can be too hot during summer but fine during winter and you are unwilling to install a ceiling fan, then try out a free standing floor fan. This means that you can plug in the fan when you need it and then store it away over the winter months.

Ceiling Fans

Not to be outdone by the free standing floor fans, the ceiling fan is a reliable and cost effective way of managing your air temperature.

  • Ceiling fans can be used indoors and outdoors. Whether you need to regulate the temperature of your living room or cool down while lounging outside, you will find a suitable ceilinf fan.
  • Not only are they versatile, but ceiling fans are also a cost effective and energy efficient way of regulating air temperature. Many fans are now available with ENERGY STAR compliance, which means they will use less electricity and save you money.
  • Ceiling fans often come with integrated lighting kits, which means that you do not have to worry about fitting any extra lighting in the room. These lights will work independent of the fan, so you will not need to have the blades rotating to have the light on.

A Combination Of Both

Free standing floor fans and ceiling fans compliment each other, so not matter what your need is you will be able to regulate the temperature to your comfort.
