Buying Tips

Buying an air conditioner is a big choice to make. Air conditioners are expensive, so making the right decision is important. Here are some tips for those of you buying an air conditioner.

Do I Need An Air Conditioner?

If you have decided that you need more than ceiling fans to cool down your home or business, then you have probably settled on an air conditioner. Before you do buy, make sure that your ceiling fans are working properly. As yourself if you will be needing them any longer, and if not, how will you take them down?

When Is The Best Time To Buy An Air Conditioner?

Definitely not in the hot summer months! If you need any air conditioner try and get it selected and installed in the winter / spring months when the demand for air conditioners is slack. This is the best time to save money as many companies will run promotions on their air conditioners to generate sales. A hot summer will drive up demand and thin out the supply, which invariably increases prices. The time to buy is during winter / spring before summer.

What Type Of Air Conditioner Do I Require?

There are 4 main groups of air conditioners on the market:

  • Window air conditioners
  • Wall air conditioners
  • Central air conditioners
  • Portable air conditioners

Each different type of air conditioner has it's own set of benefits and drawbacks. Before choosing you need to take into consideration the volume of air you need to cool, the average temperature and the actual space you have available for installation. For example, window air conditioners are ideal for cramped apartments while portable air conditioners are great for cooling you down while camping and driving in your car.

What Does My Air Conditioner Need To Do?

This is entirely dependent on the type of air conditioner you require. Some of the common features you will find and most likely need are:

  • Adjustable thermostat
  • Different cooling speeds
  • Movable air vent
  • Removable air filter
  • Energy efficient settings

Cooling Capacities

The cooling capacity of an air conditioner is measured in BTU/hour (BTU = British Thermal Units). As a general rule of thumb you can take a larger BTU/hour as being more powerful. For example, a 300 sq. ft. room may require roughly a 7000 BTU/hour air conditioner. However, the cooling capacity is also effected by the room's insulation, if it contains any appliances (fridges, freezers), if it is shaded or in direct sunlight etc. Take your time while picking your air conditioner based on BTU/hour - too strong and it will leave the air overly moist while too small will dry the air out.

Running Costs

If you already have an air conditioner installed the easiest way to gauge the running cost is to check your electricity bill for last summer. If you do not have an air conditioner then check with someone who does. Regardless, expect your electricity bill to spike if you have a hot summer.

Where Is The Best Place To Buy?

Our advice is to buy your air conditioner locally. Air conditioners are big, heavy and a real hassle to install. You really do not want an air conditioner delivered cross-country for you to miss the delivery and have to pick it up yourself from the local depot, cart it home and somehow install the thing! Ask around for reputable companies, you certainly do not want to hand over your money for a bad unit.
