Cooling Towers

With typical chilled water air conditioners and gaseous air conditioners you can dramatically boost their efficiency by using a cooling tower.

Gaseous air conditioners and chilled water air conditioners use the outside coil to dissipate heat in the air. By adding a cooling tower to your air conditioning system you can decrease the average temperature by pumping a current of cooler water through the system. The cooler water is drawn from the tower and passed over the coils of the air conditioner. This improves performance and cools the air down much more.

How Cooling Towers Work

Although cooling towers are available in many diferent sizes, shapes and finishes they all work using the same principle as detailed below:

  • Air is blown through a stream of cool water, evaporating some of the water.
  • Water moves through a plastic sheet.
  • Air is passed over the mesh, evaporating and cooling the water.

Because the process of evaporation is continuous the cooling tower will top up the system with more water automatically.

Cost

Buying and installing an air conditioning unit can be quite expensive - adding a cooling tower may seem to be exhorbitant at the time. However, this simple addition to your system does provide some great benefits that will pay for the cooling tower many times over. One of the major benefits is the energy savings the cooling tower will earn over time, particularly noticeable in climates with a low humidity.
