Ceiling Fan Direction

When you are buying a new ceiling fan, make sure that it can rotate in either direction. Why? It's simple really - a ceiling fan that can rotate in either direction is much more versatile than a fan that is solo-directional.

Typically a ceiling fan will rotate and push cool air down to floor level. This is the default rotational direction for new ceiling fans as it is the intended use for most people. Pushing air down is used mostly in hot climates where the occupants want to cool down a room.

However, many ceiling fans can also reverse the direction in which the blades rotate. This means that temperate air is pulled up from floor level and mixed with the air gathered at ceiling height. This mixing of air within a room actually raises the average air temperature in the room. Most people tend to use this function in winter when they need to heat their home, rather than cool it down.
