Components

Because of the way a ceiling fan is built they are only as good as the components that they are made out of.

Motor

There are 2 fundamental types of motor used in a ceiling fan, motors with;

  1. Sealed, lubricated ball bearings.
    • - requires very little maintenance.
  2. Rotating ball bearings in an oil bath.
    • - will need some attention occasionally.

Motor Grades

  • Performance Grade Fans
    • - these fans use larger and more powerful motos, enabling them for silent, continuous usage.
  • Medium Grade Fans
    • - built to work for approximately 12 hours or less per day.
  • Economy Grade Fans
    • - These are the least expensive of all, but are also only suitable for smaller rooms with shorter running lenghts.

Motor Housings

The motor housing is the exterior of the body that covers and contains the motor powering the fan. If the motor housing is made from a heavier material such as lead or another metal it will tend to stay steady and not wobble. A heavier housing also allows for longer downrods.

Fan Blades

Ceiling fans can come with different blade pitches.

  • Higher pitches will move more air.
  • Lower pitches will move less air.

However, the blade pitch is not the only factor that is invloved with shifting air. The power supplied by the motor ultimately controls how fast the blade can rotate, and consequently how much air can be moved. Look into the details of motor power against blade pitch - if the pitch is high and the motor power low the fan will be inefficient.

When the ceiling fan is manufactured the blades are balanced to prevent the fan from wobbling, which can develop into a serious problem. Therefore, if a fan does get damaged and needs replaced you should only replace the damaged blade with the identical part or the fan will start to wobble. This in turn may cause further damage to the fan.

Blades should be sealed from the elements, this will potect against moisture seeping in and destroying the decorative finish. A seal will also protect the blade from scratches over time through general wear and tear.
