Cooling Ceiling Fans

Broadly speaking there are two different types of ceiling fans - cooling ceiling fans and heating ceiling fans. In this article we lay out how your ceiling fan cools a room or area.

Generally speaking we choose a ceiling fan to cool us down. If you live in a warm climate where temperatures can soar, but do not wish to splash out on a costly home air conditioning system then a good ceiling fan is by far your best option. When you are choosing your ceiling fan make sure you ask if the fan blade angle is adjustable. If you are able to adjust the angle of your blade you will be able to make it push more air down and cool your room faster.

How Does It Work?

A ceiling fan works differently compared to an air conditioning system for example. Whereas an air conditioner actively cools the air by passing it through a coolant, ceiling fans work passively. Ceiling fans move air in order to cool you down, as laid out in this timeline:

  1. The fan draws in air and pushes it down.
  2. As the air moves over the surface of you skin it evaporates small neads of sweat on your skin.
  3. When this happens you feel cool.

As well as this process the ceiling fan creates a draft that circulates air around he room. Areas of cool air behind furniture and mixed with the latent air in the space. As the cool air mixes with the warmer air from above, the average air temperature in the room decreases.
