Heating Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans are generally associated with cooling, but they are also frequently used to heat rooms when the weather turns colder.

In periods of cooler weather we tend to use our oil fired central heating systems to heat the interiors of our homes and businesses. These systems work by filling radiators with warm liquid, which then heats the air. Unfortunately warm air weighs less than cool air always rises to the ceiling - wasting energy and heat. This is where a ceiling fan comes in handy!

Heating Your Room With A Ceiling Fan

When you are buying your ceiling fan you should ask if the blades are adjustable, so that you can direct the flow of air to cool or heat the room. To heat the room your ceiling fan must be configured to push the air down. Here's how it works.

  1. In the winter your central heating system heats the air.
  2. The warm air then rises to the ceiling.
  3. Turning on your ceiling fan pushes the warm air down.
  4. It then mixes with the cooler air, and raises the average temperature.

It should be noted that when you are using your ceiling fan in the winter months with the intention of mixing the air to raise the temperature, you must select the correct speed. If the fan rotates too slowly it will not mix enough air and you will not notice any tangible difference. However, if you select a high speed setting it will actually begin to cool the air. You must experiment in order to find the correct speed.

Using your ceiling fan during the winter months will actually save you money because if you can maintain a higher average air temperature you will not need to run your heating for as long. This will save you money primarily on the oil or gas that needs to be burned.
