Hugger Ceiling Fans

A hugger ceiling fan sits flush or as tight to the ceiling as possible - they 'hug' the ceiling. Hugger ceiling fans are most useful for those with low ceilings, but still need all the benefits of a ceiling fan to moderate room temperature.

A hugger fan does not hang from a downrod, rather they are installed as close to the ceiling as possible. The major benefit of this is that in the case of a room with low ceilings, the chance of being struck by a rotating blade is much reduced. However, you ought to know that because a hugger ceiling fan sits so close to the ceiling it will not shift as much air. Therefore, you may find that your room temperature is not raised / lowered just as much as you would like.

Hugger Ceiling Fan Lights

If you do choose a hugger ceiling fan, but also want to incorporate a light you will first need to make a few checks.

  • Measure the drop from ceiling to blade level.
  • Calculate how much head room you will have.
  • Now figure out how much you can afford for lighting.

The problem is that you are already most likely in a room with a low ceiling. Adding a light to the fan will further reduce the head room, and may actually make the room look and feel considerably smaller. Before making a commitment, think about the possibility of lighting the room with uplights or low lamps instead.

Low profile hugger fans are available from most of the big manufacturers. They also come in many styles, sizes and with varying finishes.
