Noisy Ceiling Fans

This is quite possibly one of the most common problems with ceiling fans, especially when they are in high use. If your ceiling fan is noisy when in use, then it is indicative of an underlying problem you should address. Try this checklist to troubleshoot your noisy ceiling fan.

Humming Noise
Got a ceiling fan with a persistent humming noise? This common problem is usually an electrical fault, and as such should be treated with care. Usually a humming noise is caused by a problem in the motor where different speed settings are enabled, but can cause damage. To fix this problem you will need to be comfortable with electrical work. Start by opening the case and removing the speed control attached to the motor. Then replace with a quiter model. If you are uncomfortable with this then take the fan down and have it fixed by a technician.
Scraping Noise
Many ceiling fans, especially those in use for long periods of time regularly, develop a scraping noise. This annoyance is most likely a problem with the blade joints. To fix this try lubricating the bearings where the blades connect to the housing using WD-40, then run slowly to allow the lubricant time to move. If this does not address the scraping noise then you should try taking the fan down and opening the case. Check the connections for any material that may be lodged and remove it. Then spray again with more lubricant, reassemble and try again. If the problem persists, take the fan down, open the case and begin to take the innards apart. Clean thoroughly, lubricate and then reassemble. If the ceiling fan still makes a scraping noise then our advice is to take it for a service.
Persistent Noise
If the fan makes a noise while running that is constant and persistent then you should stop using the fan and take it down. Open the fan up and inspect the washers for damage, these are used to stop or reduce the vibrations through the fan. If damaged they will allow the vibrations through, causing the noise. If the noise is loud and noticeable then it would be best to fit new washers, using a heavier quality.
